Dipstick reading overfilled with correct amount of oil?

I put in 5 quarts like the manual says. It shows that im 3/4 inch over the full mark. How can this be. I changed the oil filter that is almost 1/2 the size of the previous but is correct filter according to autozone. the car is a 1990 ford bronco 2 bought it 4 months ago, has 125k miles. The oil has been changed every 3000 miles according to the previous owner. Do I need to take out some oil or leave it? I dont dare drive it being unsure, i dont want to do any damage to the engine
